Seamus tried to assign Grievus to one of his slots, and immediately, the stick-throwing game ended. Grievus's mouth hung open, his tongue lolling to one side while he panted. A second later, he dropped onto the ground like he'd had the life sucked from him and, like a zombie, began dragging himself toward the door. His eyes rolled back into his head. He clawed at the stone floor.

And then vanished.

He reappeared almost immediately under the kitchen table, only this time he looked less dopey and more scared, staring at Seamus as though he were his mortal enemy.

Seamus stared back, trying to read the wolf's expressions as if it was the most natural thing in the world. It wasn't, of course, especially considering how the wolf could talk and walk upright, but a small part of his brain still tried to insist the creature was all canine and no human, or other sentient species.

After a few seconds, the fear left Grievus's wide, dark eyes, and his body relaxed. He rose to his feet, walked back over, and lay down on the warm hearth. "That was unexpected," he said.

Annie spun from her cauldron and pointed her bloody knife at him. "How did you do that? It took months to find and break all the old lord's spells, and they were only weak ones. You did it with one flick of your wrist." She lowered her arm. "Or is it some sort of hidden power?"

Seamus hadn't expected it to happen, nor had he wanted it to happen, but the fact he'd accidentally broken some of Cyrus's mind control spells over Annie and Grievus filled him with the hope he really might become more powerful, after all. Perhaps even powerful enough to resist The Light and bring order and stability to a world falling apart.

"I think it's my ability," he said. "My boss gave me a little bit of power to start with, so I could claim the dungeon when I got here. I don't know what else it does. If I focus on the dungeon itself, I see information about it. Things like what rooms there are, corridors, and stairs leading up to the surface. I don't get any clues about who built it or where it is on the map, or even much about what's above us. But I have some ideas I want to try out."

"Do we need to swear loyalty to you, Master?"

Annie shook her head. "Dungeon lords are very tricky like that, Grievus. You don't want to sign up until you're sure you can trust them. Remember the first day Cyrus showed up?"

Grievus shivered. "I won't ever forget that."

Neither will I, Seamus thought. He didn't know a great deal about the old lord. A quick search online would probably give him every scrap of information available, but if his ability would allow him to read the books on his predecessor's table, then perhaps that would be a better option. If they could learn more about Cyrus, they might figure out why the holy soldiers killed him in the first place.
